Huobi BTC (HBTC) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2020. It functions as a tokenized representation of Bitcoin within the Ethereum ecosystem, collateralized one-to-one by actual BTC.
The asset solves a fundamental interoperability bottleneck: Bitcoin’s native UTXO-based scripting limits direct composability with Ethereum smart contracts. By mirroring Bitcoin’s value as an ERC-20 token, it allows the largest crypto liquidity pool to flow into lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and yield aggregators. Without this bridging, Bitcoin sits idle in cold storage, unable to participate in programmable DeFi strategies.
HBTC operates on the Ethereum network as a standard ERC-20 token, relying entirely on Ethereum’s consensus security. No independent blockchain exists; the token’s integrity depends on the underlying smart contract audits and the custodian’s asset backing.
The token adheres to the ERC-20 standard, enabling composability with every decentralized application on Ethereum. Any dApp that accepts ERC-20 deposits can incorporate HBTC without additional integration work. Its contract is verified on Etherscan, revealing a straightforward mint-and-burn mechanism governed by a custodian. No unique cryptographic curve or novel consensus layer is embedded; the design emphasizes auditability and simplicity.
Huobi Global, the centralized exchange, deployed the token in February 2020 as a vehicle for bridging its user base’s Bitcoin holdings into DeFi. The project arrived amid a wave of similarly pegged tokens—WBTC, renBTC—competing to dominate the Bitcoin-on-Ethereum market. Early adoption tracked Huobi’s own exchange activity, with the token later migrating partial presence to the Huobi ECO Chain ecosystem.
The broader intention is to dismantle liquidity silos. Bitcoin remains the most valuable and trusted digital asset; equipping it with Ethereum’s programmability opens entirely new financial primitives. The goal is not merely representation but a functional fusion of Bitcoin’s security with Ethereum’s expressive smart contracting environment.
Minting requires depositing an equivalent amount of Bitcoin into Huobi’s custodial wallet; the smart contract then issues corresponding HBTC to the minter’s Ethereum address. Redemption reverses this flow: sending HBTC to the burn contract authorizes the release of native BTC back to the user’s Bitcoin wallet. This strict asset-backing ensures that the circulating HBTC supply always matches the locked Bitcoin reserve, maintaining the peg at a code-enforced level.
Traders supply the token as collateral across lending protocols to access leverage without liquidating their underlying Bitcoin exposure. Liquidity providers deposit HBTC into automated market makers, capturing fee income while maintaining synthetic long exposure to BTC.
Huobi BTC has a total supply of 969.49 tokens. Currently, 969.49 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $60,683,085.00, Huobi BTC ranks #8,356 among all cryptocurrencies.
