GLDT (GLDT) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2024. It is a tokenized gold instrument that digitizes physical bullion ownership, enabling fractional claims on audited gold bars to circulate across decentralized financial infrastructure.
The asset belongs to a class of on-chain real-world commodities, engineered to overcome the chronic illiquidity and indivisibility of physical gold. A single GLDT equates to 0.01 grams of gold, transforming a traditionally cumbersome store of value into a fluid, transactable unit that settles on smart contract-enabled rails. Its existence directly collapses the gap between vaulted metal and digital payment networks.
GLDT operates on the Ethereum network, with auxiliary bridged deployments on Arbitrum, Base, and the Internet Computer. This multi-chain architecture ensures the token inherits Ethereum’s battle-tested security while gaining access to faster, lower-cost Layer-2 environments and the unique canister-based execution model of ICP.
The token conforms to the ERC-20 standard across its EVM-compatible chains, facilitating direct composability with decentralized exchanges, lending pools, and treasury tools. On the Internet Computer, a dedicated canister smart contract manages mint-and-burn operations, interfacing with the GLD NFT vault. Each GLDT unit is born when a GLD NFT—a non-fungible deed to one gram of physical gold—is locked inside the DAO’s smart contract, a mechanism that algorithmically enforces a 100:1 GLDT-per-gram conversion.
Inception occurred under the stewardship of Gold DAO, a decentralized collective chartered to tokenize real-world gold reserves. The organization published its formal whitepaper detailing the two-token architecture—GLD NFTs and fungible GLDT—prior to the token’s launch on October 28, 2024. Since genesis, the DAO has maintained the sole authority to mint or retire tokens through the contractual lock-and-release sequence.
The protocol’s core thesis dismantles the friction that has long segregated gold from modern payment infrastructure. It recasts bullion not as a static hedge parked in vaults but as a programmable asset that can flow through digital wallets, automate transaction settlements, and participate in broader DeFi composability without ever leaving the custody of a transparent smart-contract wrapper.
Mechanically, GLDT functions as a bearer instrument for fractional gold exposure. Minting requires depositing a 1-gram GLD NFT into the protocol’s lockbox; that action instantly credits the depositor with 100 GLDT. Redemption reverses the journey—tokens are burned, the NFT unlock is triggered, and the holder reclaims the whole-gram deed. No centralized party intermediates this conversion; the smart contract executes it deterministically.
Market participants deploy GLDT to gain pure gold price exposure without the logistical burden of storage, insurance, or assay. Merchants and protocols treat the token as a settlement medium that tracks the spot XAU rate, enabling gold-denominated invoices, collateralized lending, and cross-border transfers that bypass the latency of traditional bullion settlement cycles.
GLDT has a maximum supply of 632,800 tokens. Currently, 594,500 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $750,288, GLDT ranks #3,281 among all cryptocurrencies.
