Zilliqa (ZIL) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2017 as a smart contract platform. It introduced sharding to on-chain execution.
The platform targets the chronic scalability bottlenecks that stifle older networks. Network congestion and soaring fees on chains like Ethereum forced developers to compromise on user experience. Zilliqa’s architecture turns high throughput into a default state rather than an aspiration.
The network operates on its own blockchain, secured by a mining process that employs the Ethash hashing algorithm. Shards partition the transaction load into smaller batches processed in parallel, collapsing finality times. Capacity expands faster than the growth of the mining network because each new shard adds its own throughput lane.
Smart contract execution runs natively within these shards, drawing on Ethash’s memory-hardness to deter ASIC centralization. The chain’s design sidesteps the linear scaling models of its predecessors. A claim in the original white paper estimates transaction speeds roughly a thousand times beyond Ethereum’s baseline.
The project originated from Singapore, with its whitepaper circulating in 2017 and the mainnet genesis block arriving on January 31, 2019. A groundswell of community interest forced a public initial coin offering that quickly met its cap. No single founder’s name dominates the narrative; the effort has always presented as a collective research-driven build.
Zilliqa’s overarching mission carves a path beyond incremental upgrades. It projects a future where decentralized applications serve millions of users without sacrificing finality or cost predictability. The emphasis stays fixed on making scalability a structural property, not a scheduled upgrade.
Inside the protocol, ZIL operates as the unit of account for all computational steps. Deploying a smart contract, invoking a function, or transferring value each consumes a fraction of ZIL in network fees. Miners providing hash power to validate shards receive ZIL block rewards, creating a closed economic loop for activity.
Developers who build on Zilliqa must hold ZIL reserves to fuel their dApps under load spikes. Miners commit hardware and electricity to earn a steady stream of freshly minted ZIL, aligning their incentive with network uptime. Even end-users navigating metaverse or gaming applications pay their way in ZIL without perceiving lag from clogged state channels.
Zilliqa has a maximum supply of 21,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 19,513,551,525 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $79,368,940, Zilliqa ranks #334 among all cryptocurrencies.
