Steem (STEEM) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2016 that anchors a decentralized social content economy. It falls under the SocialFi umbrella, blending social media interaction with programmable monetary incentives.
The Steem blockchain powers Steemit, a social media network that directly compensates participants for posting and curating material. Rather than siphoning user data to advertisers, the protocol issues new tokens to creators and voters who generate meaningful engagement. A sister platform, D.tube, extends this blueprint to video, displaying earned tokens next to likes and comments. This architecture confronts the legacy model where platforms capture nearly all value while users provide the labor.
Steem operates on its own blockchain using delegated proof-of-stake. A dynamic set of elected witnesses handles block production and transaction validation, eliminating energy-intensive mining. The community continuously elects these witnesses, aligning power with the stakeholders who hold the most vested tokens.
Transaction processing relies on a delegation voting mechanism that controls block producer rotation and reward allocation. Every upvote, downvote, and comment is recorded on-chain, producing an immutable reputation graph. Witnesses sequence these social actions into blocks under a consensus that enforces finality in seconds, though precise block-time metrics remain internal to the protocol’s economic design.
The project’s roots trace to the BitShares ecosystem, with Dan Larimer playing a key role in its conception. Launched on March 24, 2016, Steem rapidly attracted early adopters who saw a reddit-like forum where quality posts could literally pay. Yet the network soon grappled with rampant plagiarism; copied articles began out-earning original work, exposing a vulnerability in the reward algorithm that the community would later attempt to patch.
The long-range vision centers on dismantling the surveillance-driven content model by embedding monetary settlement directly into the social fabric. Instead of relying on third-party ad exchanges, value flows algorithmically from the protocol’s inflation pool to the individuals who attract attention and curation. This upends the traditional corporation-user hierarchy.
Mechanically, the STEEM token has two states. Liquid STEEM trades freely across 104 markets. To amplify one’s influence, users lock tokens into a vesting contract called Steem Power, which scales voting weight linearly and earns a portion of the daily inflation. Downvotes likewise consume voting power, giving curators a way to flag low-quality entries.
A blogger who publishes an article on Steemit receives STEEM rewards proportional to the net upvotes from the community. Voters who curate early are compensated from the same reward pool, turning content discovery into a yield-generating activity. Witness nodes stake reputation and hardware to propose blocks, earning variable inflation payments. These actions collectively sustain the network’s content moderation cycle.
Steem has a total supply of 545,820,845.73 tokens. Currently, 545,820,845.73 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $31,627,930.00, Steem ranks #650 among all cryptocurrencies.
