Sovryn (SOV) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2020, functioning as the governance token for the Sovryn Protocol. This protocol positions itself as the largest decentralized finance ecosystem built on Bitcoin, leveraging the Rootstock sidechain to execute smart contracts.
Sovryn solves the persistent fragmentation between Bitcoin and decentralized finance. By operating on Rootstock, a sidechain merged-mined with Bitcoin, the protocol enables BTC holders to lend, trade, and borrow without bridging assets to an alien network. This preserves the economic security of Bitcoin’s proof-of-work while adding programmability.
The Sovryn Protocol operates on the Rootstock network. This is a Bitcoin sidechain that enables Turing-complete smart contracts, secured through Bitcoin’s merge-mining consensus. SOV itself exists as both a native Rootstock token and an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, bridging two distinct developer communities.
The SOV token adheres to the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum. That ensures broad wallet and exchange support. On Rootstock, the protocol leverages an EVM-compatible execution environment, enabling Solidity-based smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin’s hashrate.
Sovryn launched in August 2020. Bitcoin-native DeFi was still largely experimental. A distributed collective steered development, nurturing community hubs on Telegram and Reddit. The protocol’s core contracts initially focused on lending and borrowing RBTC, then expanded into leveraged trading and swaps.
Sovryn’s foundational ambition is to render Bitcoin a fully productive asset, capable of generating yield and serving as collateral within a trust-minimized environment. It aims to dismantle the dependency on third-party custodians or wrapped Bitcoin representations that historically introduced centralization risk. The protocol envisions a financial architecture where Bitcoin’s security budget extends to a global DeFi layer.
SOV tokens enable on-chain governance over the Sovryn Protocol. A holder’s voting power scales with their token balance, used to adjust fee regimes, add new collateral types, and direct treasury allocations.
Holding SOV grants access to the governance framework. Token holders who stake their SOV can propose upgrades or veto parameter changes, ensuring that the protocol’s economic logic remains accountable to its users.
Sovryn has a maximum supply of 100,000,000 tokens. Currently, 59,478,033.74 SOV are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $1,409,821.00, Sovryn ranks #2,647 among all cryptocurrencies.
