About PayPal USD

PayPal USD (PYUSD) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2023. It is a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Paxos Trust Company, maintaining a 1:1 redeemability for fiat dollars.

The token serves as a digital dollar for on-chain payments, enabling settlement without the volatility inherent to unpegged crypto assets. PayPal USD integrates natively with the PayPal ecosystem, letting the platform’s vast user base transact in a blockchain-based dollar equivalent. Each token is backed by observable reserves, offering a bridge between traditional financial ledgers and decentralized infrastructure.

PayPal USD operates on the Ethereum network. Its core issuance logic resides within an Ethereum smart contract, which controls minting and burning based on fiat reserve audits. Validators and full nodes on Ethereum collectively enforce the contract state, ensuring no unauthorized token creation.

The token conforms to the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum and Arbitrum One, while its Solana deployment uses the SPL token framework and the Stellar deployment leverages native Stellar asset capabilities. Such multichain architecture allows PYUSD to move across ecosystems without wrapped representations, as Paxos issues the asset natively on each chain. Transaction finality, block times, and fee structures vary with each host network but do not alter the underlying collateralization.

The project originated from a partnership between PayPal and Paxos, with the initial launch date set at August 7, 2023. Paxos, a regulated trust company chartered under New York banking law, acts as the official issuer and reserve custodian. The entry represented PayPal’s first proprietary stablecoin, following years of enabling crypto buying and selling on its platform.

PayPal USD’s long-term mission is to rewire digital payments by making a trusted dollar format available as a native internet asset. It aims to compress settlement windows from days to seconds and to extend the reach of dollar-denominated commerce into permissionless protocols. Because it operates on public ledgers, the token invites programmability—smart contracts can automate disbursements, escrow, and revenue sharing without third-party intermediaries.

Mechanically, PYUSD is a custodial stablecoin wherein Paxos mints exactly one token for each dollar received and burns exactly one token for each dollar withdrawn. The Ethereum smart contract prevents any issuance not matched by a corresponding fiat deposit, enforced through off-chain attestation reports. When a user transfers PYUSD on-chain, the token operates like any other ERC-20, but the underlying dollar remains within Paxos’s accounts at U.S. banks.

Commerce platforms can integrate PYUSD to settle customer payments in near-real time, eliminating credit card processing delays and chargeback disputes. Remittance corridors use the token to move dollar value cross-border without the layered fees of correspondent banking. DeFi lending markets accept PYUSD as collateral, enabling users to borrow other assets while maintaining exposure to a stable instrument.

PayPal USD has a total supply of 3,454,023,698.87 tokens. Currently, 3,454,023,698.87 tokens circulate. With a market capitalization of $3,453,216,461, PayPal USD ranks #32 among all cryptocurrencies.
