Audius (AUDIO) is a cryptocurrency. It functions as the native platform token of the Audius streaming protocol, a decentralized system engineered to disintermediate the relationship between music creators and their audiences.
The protocol squarely targets the economic inefficiencies of legacy streaming services, where intermediaries extract disproportionate rents from artist royalties. Musicians upload content directly, set terms, and receive payments without label gatekeepers. Fans compensate creators through transparent on-chain mechanisms, bypassing the standard 30-to-50 percent platform commission. A smart contract layer handles the entire remittance flow.
Audius operates as a multi-chain token on the Ethereum and Solana networks. It does not run its own consensus layer. Instead, it leverages the security and finality of these established ledgers to anchor state transitions for music metadata and payment channels. By avoiding a proprietary chain, the protocol sidesteps validator bootstrapping and inherits the liquidity of widely adopted ecosystems.
The token conforms to the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum and the SPL standard on Solana, with a bridged variant circulating on the Energi chain. Token contracts pass verification on Etherscan and Solscan. The protocol publishes its open-source codebase without restriction.
The project’s genesis lacks a single identifiable founder; it coalesced from a distributed collective of engineers and sound artists. This emergent community launched the protocol without the typical venture-backed narrative, instead bootstrapping adoption through grassroots artist migrations. Early participants migrated from platforms like SoundCloud, drawn by the promise of programmable royalty splits and censorship-resistant hosting. These early adopters formed the backbone of the initial node network, running infrastructure on spare cloud instances.
The long-term objective centers on restructuring the global music economy into a permissionless utility layer. Value flows directly from listener to creator via smart contracts, eliminating the need for trust in centralized payments processors. In this vision, licensing, attribution, and royalty distribution become automated, auditable primitives rather than opaque corporate functions. Such a design also renders the platform natively global, impervious to region-specific licensing blackouts that plague centralized catalogs.
Within that framework, AUDIO functions as the staking and governance backbone. Node operators lock capital to run discovery and content servers, earning a cut of streaming fees proportional to uptime. Token holders steer protocol upgrades via on-chain voting, while artists stake AUDIO to unlock promotional features and higher revenue shares. Distributions also flow to listeners who curate trending tracks through staking mechanisms.
To run a content node and earn fee shares, an operator must acquire and escrow AUDIO. Artists seeking advanced analytics and customizable artist tokens lock a portion of their earnings. Governance participants stake tokens to vote on protocol improvement proposals. Curators allocate staked AUDIO to emerging songs, generating yield when their picks gain traction.
Audius has a total supply of 1,415,829,942 tokens. Currently, 1,415,829,941 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $30,195,658, Audius ranks #680 among all cryptocurrencies.
