Aerodrome Finance (AERO) is a cryptocurrency. It functions as the native liquidity engine for Base, a decentralized exchange that merges an automated market maker with a vote-lock governance framework.
The protocol attacks liquidity fragmentation head-on. By consolidating pools into a unified interface, it compresses spreads and deepens order books across the chain. Aerodrome inherits the ve(3,3) model from Velodrome V2—a mechanism proven on Optimism—recalibrated for Base’s unique fee environment and user base.
Aerodrome Finance operates on the Base network. The smart contracts execute entirely on Base, leveraging its EVM compatibility and low-fee design. All swaps, deposits, and governance votes settle deterministically on-chain, inheriting the security guarantees of the underlying rollup.
The codebase is open-source and accessible via GitHub, fostering community vetting and derivative integrations. Smart contract addresses are published and verifiable on BaseScan, where every function call is traceable. AERO itself conforms to widely implemented token interfaces, ensuring it slots seamlessly into wallets and aggregators without custom middleware.
Aerodrome materialized from the Velodrome lineage, adopting its liquidity flywheel architecture with minimal modification. Documentation credits the Velodrome V2 blueprint as the foundation, refined for Base shortly after the chain’s mainnet debut. The launch was community-steered, absent a publicly identified founder or centralized entity, reflecting a broad DeFi ethos of permissionless deployment.
The overarching goal is to become Base’s liquidity nexus—a venue where any token pair can trade with minimal price impact and where incentive flows are governed directly by those with skin in the game. By internalizing fee generation and redistributing it according to veAERO voting, the protocol seeks to align value extraction with long-term token commitment.
AERO tokens are the primary resource for governance and yield direction. Locking AERO mints veAERO, a non-transferable receipt that decays linearly over the lock period. veAERO holders vote on gauge weights each epoch, allocating newly minted AERO emissions to specific liquidity pools. This design ensures that inflationary rewards flow to markets where committed voters have the greatest exposure.
Traders pay swap fees on Aerodrome’s pools, a percentage of which accrues to liquidity providers. LPs add assets to select gauge-eligible pools, earning both swap fees and AERO distributions. Meanwhile, any AERO holder can lock tokens and vote for the pools where they provide liquidity, closing the loop between governance power and direct economic return.
Aerodrome Finance has a total supply of 1,884,864,776.25 tokens. Currently, 926,261,593.04 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $403,248,092, Aerodrome Finance ranks #118 among all cryptocurrencies.
