Staked ETH (osETH) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2021. It functions as the liquid staking token for StakeWise V3, a second-generation decentralized staking protocol engineered to unlock liquidity on the Ethereum network.
The asset resolves a fundamental friction in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus: the capital stalemate induced by locking ETH in validator nodes. Without liquid staking, an ETH holder who stakes assets to secure the network forfeits the ability to deploy that same capital across decentralized lending and trading venues. osETH disentangles the utility of staking from the illiquidity of the deposit by issuing a tradable receipt token.
Staked ETH (osETH) operates on the Ethereum network. The token itself lives as a smart contract on the mainnet, coordinating mint and burn events through the StakeWise vault infrastructure. Its state transitions, from deposit to reward accrual and eventual redemption, execute entirely within the bounds of Ethereum’s execution layer.
Technically, osETH adheres to the ERC-20 standard, guaranteeing broad compatibility with Ethereum wallets and decentralized applications. A bridged representation also exists on Arbitrum One, the optimistic rollup, where users benefit from dramatically lower transaction costs while retaining exposure to the underlying Ethereum stake. The protocol’s open-source codebase follows a modular architecture, with distinct contracts handling deposits, withdrawals, and oracle-based reward distribution.
The StakeWise project traces its origins to early 2021, with the V3 iteration emerging as a refinement of prior efforts to make Ethereum staking more composable. Instead of a single monolithic pool, V3 introduces isolated vaults where node operators and liquidity providers can calibrate parameters. This design permits permissionless creation of specialized staking environments, broadening the protocol’s surface area beyond one-size-fits-all solutions.
The overarching purpose centers on capital efficiency. Ethereum’s security model demands staked assets stay put, yet decentralized finance requires fluidity. osETH bridges these competing imperatives, operating as a bearer instrument that carries not only the principal but continuously compounding protocol-layer rewards into any smart contract that recognizes the token standard.
From a mechanical standpoint, osETH minting is triggered when a user deposits ETH into any whitelisted StakeWise V3 vault. The newly minted tokens reflect a pro-rata claim on the vault’s total assets, including staking yield net of validator penalties and protocol fees. Redemption follows the reverse path: osETH is burned, and the underlying ETH, plus rewards, is released or directed according to the user’s instruction.
An Ethereum holder seeking yield can route ETH into a StakeWise vault, mint osETH, and subsequently supply it to a lending market such as Aave or Compound. There, the token acts as collateral for borrowing stablecoins, creating a leveraged staking position without additional active management. Liquidity providers on decentralized exchanges also pair osETH with ETH to capture swap fees from traders who need instant exit liquidity for staked positions.
Staked ETH (osETH) has a total supply of 160,538.85 tokens. Currently, 167,627.59 tokens are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $411,056,640.00, Staked ETH (osETH) ranks #8,329 among all cryptocurrencies.
