Vai (VAI) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2020. The asset functions as the native decentralized stablecoin of the Venus Protocol, a money market and synthetic stablecoin platform on the BNB Smart Chain.
The coin’s primary role is to serve as a censorship-resistant unit of account within the BNB Chain DeFi ecosystem. Users mint VAI by posting on-chain collateral into the Venus Protocol, effectively bootstrapping a stable value instrument without a central issuer. This model solves the friction of reliance on fiat-backed stablecoins that can be frozen or restricted, offering a liquidity tool that respects the permissionless ethos of decentralized finance.
Vai operates on the BNB Smart Chain network. The chain’s architecture provides fast block confirmations, which allows VAI transfers to settle within seconds, matching the cadence required by high-frequency DeFi protocols. The token’s existence as a BEP-20 asset ensures deep compatibility across the network’s wallet and exchange infrastructure.
As a BEP-20 token, VAI inherits the smart contract composability native to the Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible BNB Smart Chain. Its minting and redemption logic is governed by immutable Venus Protocol smart contracts that algorithmically adjust collateralization ratios to maintain the soft peg. Every VAI unit in circulation corresponds directly to an over-collateralized debt position that anyone can audit on-chain.
The Venus Protocol launched on the emerging BNB Smart Chain in 2020, with VAI debuting as the system’s algorithmic stablecoin component. It arrived during a period when synthetic dollar instruments were gaining traction as alternatives to traditional stablecoin giants. From genesis, the protocol enabled borrowers to deposit major crypto assets and generate VAI up to a set loan-to-value threshold, embedding a liquidation engine that protects solvency.
Venus Protocol designed VAI to function as a fully decentralized representation of value, disconnected from any single fiat reserve. The overarching goal is to provide a trust-minimized stablecoin that can scale across the BNB Chain without relying on a centralized custodian or banking rails. This aligns with the broader DeFi movement toward disintermediated financial primitives.
In practice, the minting process requires depositing supported collateral—such as BNB or BUSD—and then drawing VAI against it. Repaying the borrowed VAI along with accrued interest unlocks the underlying collateral. The stablecoin’s supply therefore expands and contracts purely in response to borrower demand, with interest rate curves that modulate that demand. By design, the protocol does not allow uncollateralized minting, making every token a claim on a specific basket of locked assets.
Validators staking on BNB Chain might not engage directly with VAI, but liquidity providers routinely deposit it into automated market makers to capture trading fees. DeFi strategies often loop the asset: depositing collateral to mint VAI, then supplying that VAI to a lending pool to earn an additional yield layer. Arbitrageurs also exploit any price deviations from the dollar peg by buying or selling VAI in secondary markets and redeeming it at par through the Venus platform.
Vai has a maximum supply of 8,484,461.45 tokens. Currently, 2,440,304.04 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $2,440,623.00, Vai ranks #2,157 among all cryptocurrencies.
