Streamr (DATA) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2017. It anchors a decentralized infrastructure protocol designed for real-time data pipelines, classifying it squarely within the Web3, DePIN, and AI & Big Data sectors.
The network dismantles the chokehold of centralized data aggregators by enabling peer-to-peer streaming, sharing, and monetization of live information. Publishers transmit weather telemetry, IoT sensor feeds, financial tick data, or machine logs directly to subscribers, all without a middleman extracting rent. This architecture specifically targets the friction of opaque data brokerage, where value accrues to platform operators instead of the data originators.
Streamr operates on the Ethereum network. Its DATA token achieves cross-chain portability through canonical bridge contracts deployed on BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, and Gnosis Chain, a design that decouples the token’s utility from any single execution environment. The token’s multi-chain footprint mirrors the protocol’s ambition to service diverse decentralized applications wherever they settle.
Technically, DATA conforms to the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum and maps to equivalent standards—BEP-20 among them—on its auxiliary networks, guaranteeing uniform transactional behavior. The entire codebase, hosted on GitHub under the network-monorepo, permits public auditing via Etherscan, Ethplorer, and ArkM chain explorers. Transaction finality and security depend upon the underlying platforms, with Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus inherited by the token’s primary settlement layer.
A whitepaper titled “Streamr Datacoin” surfaced in July 2017, laying out the token’s economic model months before the actual launch. The project’s origins trace back to a team intent on rearchitecting how real-time data moves through the internet, yet no founding individuals are publicly codified in the current metadata. The token entered circulation on November 3, 2017, marking a quiet debut that would later align with the DePIN narrative that gained traction years afterward.
The protocol’s long-range objective is a fully decentralized data layer for Web3, where autonomous agents and smart contracts can discover, subscribe to, and pay for data streams without human intervention or centralized gatekeepers. This vision extends beyond simple messaging; it implies a re-plumbing of the internet’s data distribution substrate to run on cryptoeconomic incentives rather than corporate APIs.
Mechanically, the DATA token operates as the native payment rail for all stream transactions. A publisher denominates the price per minute or per data point in DATA, and a smart contract-driven Broker mechanism facilitates atomic swaps between the publisher’s token and the subscriber’s payment. No third-party escrow is needed; settlement occurs directly at the protocol level, enabling usage-based billing that traditional subscription models cannot replicate.
In practice, a developer building a decentralized weather derivatives application would hold DATA to purchase continuous temperature feeds from a global network of amateur stations. An IoT fleet operator could earn DATA by selling anonymized sensor streams to AI training pipelines. Bridges allow that same token to move into Polygon-based DeFi protocols or BNB Chain liquidity pools, extending its utility beyond pure data payments.
Streamr has a maximum supply of 2,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 1,327,523,352 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $1,001,199, Streamr ranks #2,976 among all cryptocurrencies.
