Skycoin (SKY) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2015. It operates as an infrastructure-centric digital asset situated squarely inside the decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) category.
The protocol constructs a hardware-anchored alternative to conventional internet architecture. Rather than simply moving ledger entries, Skycoin fields a parallel backbone for bandwidth, storage, and general-purpose computation, directly confronting the concentration risk embedded in cloud oligopolies and carrier-grade transit monopolies. A zero-fee payment rail runs natively across that same substrate, collapsing the split between a settlement layer and the physical mesh it rides on.
The network operates on its own blockchain using obelisk. This consensus mechanism abandons both proof-of-work’s energy burn and proof-of-stake’s plutocratic drift, substituting a web-of-trust graph where each node subscribes to a small set of peers and a node’s influence scales with the density of its subscriber mesh.
Transaction finality lands in roughly two seconds. Because the system eschews direct fee extraction, it leans on a secondary accounting unit called Coin Hours, which decays and regenerates as a function of holding time, effectively substituting temporal commitment for pecuniary cost. The entire stack traces back to a deterministic language, CX, derived from Golang, while the execution environment can run on a 30-watt mobile processor, dissolving the typical hardware barrier to consensus participation.
The project’s core contributors previously shaped early Bitcoin and Ethereum client implementations. A genesis block minted on April 2, 2015, crystallized the network, and the years that followed accreted a broad ecosystem: the Fiber token issuance factory, the Sky-Messenger encrypted relay, and a decentralized bulletin-board social layer called BBS.
The long horizon objective is to re-wire the internet’s physical underlay as a community-owned commodity. Skywire, the network’s flagship overlay, aims to route packets across a mesh of citizen-operated nodes, making last-mile connectivity a locally provisioned good instead of a tolled service.
Purely on mechanics, the SKY token serves as a vault that continuously issues Coin Hours. Each unspent transaction output drips a tiny time-based credit, and those hourly credits are what actually extinguish the computational cost of broadcasting state transitions, keeping the base token’s on-chain velocity deliberately low while removing gatekeepers from the fee layer.
Validators do not earn block subsidies denominated in SKY directly; they accrue trust-weighted topology influence. Any participant, however, can hold SKY to steadily generate Coin Hours and later burn those hours to execute contract calls, push settlement transactions, or reserve encrypted tunnel capacity inside Skywire, converting passive holding time into active network utility.
Skycoin has a maximum supply of 100,000,000 tokens. Currently, 23,827,698 SKY are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $1,993,623, Skycoin ranks #2,327 among all cryptocurrencies.
