About Reef

Reef (REEF) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2020. The project functions as a dedicated layer-1 blockchain engineered specifically for issuing and trading tokenized equity and alternative investment products.

The protocol addresses a persistent friction in digital asset markets: the regulatory complexity of onboarding retail participants into tokenized securities. By embedding compliance mechanisms natively within its execution layer, Reef equips regulated issuers with the technical rails to deploy securities-compliant tokens without compromising transactional speed or cost. Real estate firms, sports franchises, and other alternative asset managers form the intended coalition of builders.

Reef operates on its own blockchain using a hybrid consensus of Proof-of-Work and nominated Proof-of-Stake. This dual-layer mechanism marries the liveness guarantees of PoW with the finality and governance efficiency of a nominated staking model. Validators simultaneously participate in block production and attestation duties, while the PoW component anchors the chain against certain classes of adversarial behavior.

The chain achieves full Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility, allowing developers to port Solidity-based smart contracts without modification. The protocol integrates the ERC-3643 standard—a token specification for permissioned securities—at the foundational level, enabling identity-whitelisting and transfer restriction enforcement across all compliant assets. An early token incarnation as a Harmony network asset bridges the project’s liquidity roots with its sovereign mainnet infrastructure.

The project entered public markets via the Binance Launchpool platform shortly after its 2020 mainnet deployment, drawing immediate liquidity and community attention. Early institutional backing from Alameda Research and Binance Labs (now YZi Labs) provided both capital and ecosystem connectivity. Originally incubated within the Harmony ecosystem as Reef DeFi, the initiative rebranded and migrated to a standalone chain to support its securities-specific ambitions.

Reef’s long-term thesis positions the network as infrastructure for the next wave of capital market disintermediation: bringing institutionally-compliant, tokenized real-world assets on-chain while preserving access for non-accredited individuals. Rather than a general-purpose smart contract platform, it narrows its focus to the regulated securities vertical, advancing a vision where fractionalized ownership of apartments, athlete contracts, or infrastructure debt operates with the same settlement finality and transparency as a spot crypto trade.

The REEF token functions as the native gas unit for all state mutations across the Reef chain, from simple transfers to complex compliance-aware contract invocations. Protocol validators bond REEF to activate node operations, with slashing conditions safeguarding network integrity. Application-layer processes, including regulatory checks and identity assertions, consume the token as a rate-limiting resource, tying economic weight to security enforcement.

Validators stake REEF to secure the network and earn protocol emissions; market makers and arbitrageurs rely on the token’s liquidity across the 236 active trading pairs catalogued by CoinMarketCap. Issuers deploying securities-compliant tokens pay configuration fees in REEF, aligning their operational presence with network maintenance. Ecosystem participants holding the token can interact with tokenized asset offerings launched on the chain’s decentralized exchange infrastructure.

Reef has a total supply of 36,089,167,483 tokens. Currently, 36,089,167,483 are in circulation, a figure that mirrors the total supply precisely, indicating a fully unlocked token schedule. With a market capitalization of $2,645,630, Reef ranks #2,098 among all cryptocurrencies.
