Packet (PKT) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2024. The asset anchors a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) engineered to shift internet service provision away from centralized telecoms.
The protocol tackles the bandwidth bottleneck head-on by constructing a permissionless mesh network. Node operators run hardware that relays internet traffic, effectively turning home routers into micro-ISPs. This topology eliminates single points of failure and suppresses last-mile pricing, a friction that regional monopolies have long exploited.
The token itself resides on the Base network, an Ethereum Layer 2 rollup. The underlying PKT Network, however, operates an independent blockchain secured by PacketCrypt, a bandwidth-hard proof-of-work algorithm. Consensus emerges not from hashrate but from verifiable upstream and downstream data throughput.
A one-minute block time governs the PKT Network's state progression. PacketCrypt redefines mining eligibility: a candidate must demonstrate sustained bandwidth allocation rather than expenditure of electricity. On Base, the PKT representation complies with the ERC-20 token standard at contract address 0x917f39bb33…, granting it full composability with decentralized finance primitives.
The project’s intellectual roots trace to a February 2021 whitepaper that formally introduced the incentive design for community-owned internet infrastructure. The Base token launched on August 20, 2024, bridging the original network to liquid markets. No single founder dominates the narrative; the initiative has grown through the self-organized participation of bandwidth providers across multiple continents.
The long-run goal is the dissolution of entrenched ISP monopolies by replacing them with a user-governed mesh layer. Every relay hop expands the network’s footprint, methodically dismantling the pricing leverage that legacy carriers hold over unserved and underserved regions.
Miners commit bandwidth to validate blocks, collecting PKT rewards in direct proportion to their contribution of data throughput. The token functions as the settlement currency for traffic forwarding: nodes advertise their available capacity in PKT terms, and peers pay to route packets through those channels. Block rewards constitute the primary issuance mechanism, though no fixed halving schedule applies.
A prospective operator stakes PKT to signal network reliability, earning priority in routing tables and a commensurate share of transaction fees. Consumers use the token to purchase mesh internet access from any willing peer. VPN exit node providers also quote their services in PKT, giving the token utility as a general-purpose payment instrument for digital connectivity.
Packet has a maximum supply of 6,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 3,736,988,110 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $636,716, Packet ranks #3,440 among all cryptocurrencies.
