Pactus (PAC) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2024. The project operates as a decentralized layer-1 blockchain and smart contract platform, engineered to support low-energy consensus and permissionless computation.
The protocol’s core niche lies in re-engineering proof-of-stake to strip out delegation entirely. Pactus replaces the familiar elected validator cabals with a continuously reselected sortition committee, a design that directly blunts the centralizing drift plaguing delegated proof-of-stake networks. Vote buying, stake concentration, and validator ossification become structurally irrelevant when block producers are drawn afresh each epoch by a random function.
Pactus operates on its own blockchain using solid state proof of stake (SSPoS). This consensus model severs the link between continuous delegation and block authority, instead assembling a temporary validator committee from all active stakers via a verifiable randomness beacon. Because the committee churns without human campaigning, no long-term delegation cartel can entrench itself over transaction ordering or protocol upgrades.
The SSPoS architecture slashes hardware requirements to a fraction of what conventional proof-of-stake or proof-of-work chains demand. Validator nodes need no expensive GPUs, no SSD arrays optimized for extreme throughput; the sortition machinery handles coordination with minimal state overhead. The network supports smart contracts, although public materials have yet to detail its virtual machine, word length, or any formal equivalent to the Ethereum Virtual Machine standard.
Development on Pactus commenced in 2021, driven by a distributed open-source collective of blockchain engineers, cryptographers, and infrastructure operators. Multiple testnet cycles hardened the codebase before mainnet genesis on January 24, 2024. The launch distributed supply directly to early contributors and node runners who had sustained the test phases, bypassing any venture-capital presale or institutional allocation window.
The community’s stated horizon extends toward a comprehensive decentralized fabric by late 2025—not merely a payment rail but a settlement layer flanked by decentralized storage, a runtime for off-chain compute, and a suite of developer services. This trajectory frames Pactus as an attempt to compress a cloud-like infrastructure into a single sovereign chain, running without custodial intermediaries or API gatekeepers.
Inside the network, the PAC token denominates all transaction fees and smart contract execution costs. Validator candidates must lock a collateral balance of PAC to enter the active staking pool; the protocol’s sortition weight then scales a node’s selection probability with its stake, while the absence of delegation bars any passive token holder from leasing voting power to a professional operator. Block rewards and fee gratuities flow to the committee members who actually propose and validate that epoch’s blocks.
Running a validator means accumulating and staking PAC, then meeting minimal uptime and liveness requirements to stay eligible for the periodic sortition draw. Holders without a node use PAC to pay for native transfers, deploy contract bytecode, and settle storage or compute consumption, burning a fraction of gas on every operation. Roadmap documents foreshadow the token eventually settling payments for decentralized storage retrieval and access to community-hosted developer tools, though those capacities remain aspirational until ecosystem completion milestones are met.
Pactus has a maximum supply of 42,000,000 tokens. Currently, 681,677 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $12,504.19, Pactus ranks #9,484 among all cryptocurrencies.
