OMG Network (OMG) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2017. It operates as a value transfer network specifically architected for ETH and ERC-20 tokens.
The network addresses Ethereum’s chronic congestion and fee volatility head-on. It offloads value transfers to a dedicated, high-speed infrastructure using a Plasma-based commitment scheme. Rather than congesting the base layer, OMG batches transactions into sidechains with dramatically lower cost profiles. Throughput multiplies. Settlement finality, however, remains rooted in Ethereum’s security model.
The protocol operates on the Ethereum network. It employs a trust-minimized Plasma design where a hierarchy of child chains periodically anchors to the Ethereum mainnet, binding their state transitions into a single root contract. This architecture keeps the base layer’s integrity intact while externalizing execution.
The native OMG token is an ERC-20 standard asset, fully composable within the Ethereum ecosystem. The project’s codebase—encompassing Plasma contracts and an Elixir implementation—is publicly auditable, with the primary Ethereum contract deployed at 0xd26114cd6ee289accf82350c8d8487fedb8a0c07. The network’s state channel mechanics enable rapid value settlement without sacrificing deterministic finality.
The project traces its genesis to July 6, 2017, surfacing during a period when Ethereum scaling became an existential imperative. Pantera Capital provided early backing, signaling deep institutional conviction in the payment-centric thesis. Years later, the token was swept into regulatory discourse when it landed on a list of alleged SEC securities. That designation reshaped its exchange footprint. It never fully derailed technical development.
OMG Network aims to dismantle the friction plaguing cross-border payments and merchant settlement. Reducing confirmation times to seconds and slashing fees below a penny remains its engineering lodestar. The ambition extends well beyond speculative velocity—toward a neutral, always-on rail for programmable money.
Inside this system, OMG functions as the settlement currency for value transfers. Actors initiate state channel exits and verify fraud proofs using the token, aligning economic incentives with honest network participation. The token’s circulation speed thus mirrors actual network throughput rather than secondary market speculation.
Merchants integrate OMG to instantly finalize cryptocurrency payments without enduring Ethereum’s irregular block intervals. Exchange operators push user withdrawals through the network in minutes. Remittance corridors tap the token for near-zero-cost value transfer across jurisdictions, compressing what once required correspondent banking into a few seconds of Plasma computation.
OMG Network has a maximum supply of 140,245,399 tokens. Currently, 140,245,398.25 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $8,455,088.00, OMG Network ranks #1,305 among all cryptocurrencies.
