NuCypher (NU) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2020 that functions as a decentralized privacy layer and cryptographic access control protocol for distributed systems. It equips developers with the tools to encrypt data on public blockchains without surrendering control of access rights.
The protocol delivers a decentralized key management system built around proxy re-encryption, a cryptographic technique that allows a third party to transform ciphertext between two different public keys without ever glimpsing the underlying plaintext. This directly tackles the friction of enforcing secret-sharing policies on transparent ledgers where everything is visible by default. Builders tap the service to grant and revoke data access dynamically, eliminating the need for a trusted central custodian to hold decryption keys.
NuCypher operates on the Ethereum network using proof-of-stake consensus. A constellation of staker nodes—collateralized by NU tokens—performs re-encryption operations and collectively enforces the access logic dictated by the application. This architecture turns key management into a permissionless, market-driven utility.
The network harnesses proxy re-encryption to let a semi-trusted proxy re-encrypt data between distinct key pairs while learning nothing about the secret. NU conforms to the ERC-20 token standard on Ethereum, and the proof-of-stake mechanism ensures that node operators lock economic value as a honesty bond. Slashing conditions, inherent to the staking design, penalize nodes that deviate from the protocol rules.
The project crystallized out of academic research into threshold and proxy cryptography, launching formally in October 2020. Its early development was shepherded by a collective of distributed systems engineers and cryptographers drawn to the problem of decentralized secret management. The accompanying whitepaper codifies a system that stands on years of peer-reviewed cryptographic literature, not on isolated whitepaper-only designs.
The network’s long-term horizon aims to weave privacy natively into the fabric of Web3 by giving smart contract developers programmable, on-chain secret management. Instead of treating confidentiality as an optional afterthought bolted onto transparent ledgers, the protocol bakes access control directly into the application logic. The result is a shift away from fully public-by-default datastores toward architectures where encrypted data can be selectively unlocked under precise, auditable conditions.
NU tokens serve as the economic engine for the re-encryption marketplace. Node operators must lock NU as collateral to qualify for work assignments, and their compensation scales with both the size of the stake and the reliability of their uptime. On the demand side, applications spend NU to request re-encryption operations, creating a closed-loop mechanism where token velocity tracks actual network usage.
Validators stake NU to secure the infrastructure and earn a proportional cut of the fees flowing from re-encryption requests. Developers acquire and burn through NU when their dApps need to grant or revoke data access on-chain, turning the token into a direct operational resource rather than a passive speculative asset.
NuCypher has a total supply of 3,885,390,081.75 tokens. Currently, 0 are in circulation, a reflection of either a full lock-up schedule or a newly restructured token distribution. The token trades around $0.019871 with near-zero 24-hour volume. With a market capitalization of $0, NuCypher ranks #5,739 among all cryptocurrencies.
