Nillion (NIL) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2025. It operates as the first blind computer—a private computation and storage network that employs Privacy-Enhancing Technologies to process encrypted data without ever exposing the underlying plaintext.
The protocol targets a stubborn bottleneck in decentralized infrastructure: executing meaningful logic on fully encrypted datasets. Nillion’s modular privacy stack spans an encrypted database (nilDB) that shards data across nodes while still permitting computations over ciphertext, an AI Virtual Machine co-developed with Meta for secure inference, and a set of trusted execution environments (nilTEE) for high-speed private model execution. These tools allow builders to construct private personalized AI agents, confidential data marketplaces, and censorship-resistant applications that never leak user data.
Nillion operates on the Ethereum network as an ERC-20 token, relying on Ethereum’s consensus for asset security and finality. The blind computation layer itself is architecturally separate, running across a dedicated coordination layer and the Petnet—a decentralized node network that collectively processes encrypted data using multiparty computation and other PETs.
The NIL token adheres to the ERC-20 standard, with its primary contract deployed on Ethereum. Its broader computational architecture integrates nilTEE—trusted execution environments that accelerate private inference—and a nilVM development framework that supports Python and JavaScript, lowering the barrier for web3 developers. Staking participants lock NIL to underwrite network security, validating blind computation tasks and ensuring incentive alignment.
The project’s token generation event took place on March 24, 2025, immediately listing on Ethereum. A subsequent Binance Launchpool placement fuelled early liquidity and broadened retail exposure. Since then, NIL has proliferated across 120 trading pairs on 22 exchanges, signaling rapid adoption among AI-focused crypto traders and privacy advocates.
Nillion’s ultimate objective is to unbundle data utility from exposure, creating a universal blind computation layer where sensitive information never appears in the clear—not even to the nodes performing the work. This architecture reimagines how confidential machine learning, cross-institutional data sharing, and private decentralized applications can function at scale, discarding the old binary between usability and privacy.
The NIL token functions mechanically as the network’s gas: it covers blind computation fees incurred when querying encrypted databases or executing private AI inference. Validators stake NIL to secure the coordination layer and participate in consensus on computation results. Token holders also wield governance power, voting on parameter adjustments and protocol upgrades directly on-chain. Access to Nillion’s specialized modules—nilDB, AIVM, nilVM—requires holding or spending NIL, aligning utility with network demand.
Validators lock NIL to bond their integrity, earning protocol emissions for correctly executing private computation tasks. Developers pay NIL to spin up encrypted database instances or to run Python-based AI models inside nilVM without exposing inputs. Governance participants use staked NIL to steer protocol evolution, casting votes on fee structures and module integrations.
Nillion has a total supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 448,417,375 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $18,479,472, Nillion ranks #898 among all cryptocurrencies.
