Coinbase tokenized stock (xStock) (COINX) is a cryptocurrency. It functions as a fully collateralized, tokenized equity instrument representing a fractional share of Coinbase Global, Inc., operating within the xStocks ecosystem managed by Backed Finance.
xStocks dismantle long-standing barriers to US equity markets—brokerage mandates, geographic restrictions, and prohibitive costs—by delivering a 1:1 asset-backed token that moves natively through decentralized finance protocols. COINX, one of 57 available US stocks and ETFs in the suite, grants non-US participants a direct legal claim to the economic value of the underlying equity without a traditional brokerage account. The token integrates with lending markets, automated market makers, and yield aggregators across multiple blockchains.
The token operates on the Solana network. It also maintains active smart contract deployments on Ethereum, Arbitrum One, and BNB Smart Chain, enabling cross-chain liquidity and broader access. This multi-chain design prevents dependency on a single execution environment and lets users interact with COINX wherever their preferred DeFi protocols reside.
As an SPL token on Solana, an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and Arbitrum, and a BEP-20 token on BNB Smart Chain, COINX adheres to the dominant token standards of each ecosystem. Backed Finance mints and burns tokens in response to creation and redemption requests, guaranteeing the circulating supply mirrors the number of shares held in regulated custody. This mechanism enforces a strict 1:1 peg to the underlying Coinbase stock price.
The xStocks protocol originated from Backed Finance, an entity focused on bringing real-world assets on-chain. COINX emerged as a curated offering of traditional equities tokenized for non-US users, with its legal and technical framework laid out in the Backed Finance documentation. Adoption accelerated through listings on both centralized and decentralized trading venues, attracting participants seeking equity exposure without geographical friction.
xStocks were engineered to obliterate the legacy frictions of cross-border equity investing—intermediary layers, minimum ticket sizes, and regulatory silos. By issuing permissionless bearer-asset tokens that confer a legal claim on stock value, the protocol opens US capital markets to on-chain users globally. The broader ambition is a unified financial system where stocks and DeFi applications coexist on the same settlement layer, composable and borderless.
Within the protocol, each COINX token serves as a transferable claim on a fractional share of Coinbase stock held in a Backed Finance custodian account. Holders cannot exercise corporate voting rights, but they can collateralize the token in lending protocols, supply it to decentralized exchange liquidity pools, or hold it for passive price exposure. All economic benefits tied to the stock’s performance flow to the token holder through its market value.
Market participants acquire COINX via integrated centralized exchanges or decentralized liquidity pools to gain direct exposure to Coinbase’s equity. Liquidity providers deposit the token into automated market makers to earn a share of trading fees, while borrowers and lenders utilize it as collateral in DeFi money markets. Arbitrageurs keep the token’s price anchored to the underlying stock by exploiting deviations across venues.
Coinbase tokenized stock (xStock) has a total supply of 664,182.07 tokens. Currently, 22,842.98 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $4,572,782.00, Coinbase tokenized stock (xStock) ranks #1,704 among all cryptocurrencies.
