ARK is a cryptocurrency launched in 2017. Classified as a Layer 1 blockchain platform, it functions as an open-source infrastructure for customizable sidechains and decentralized applications, blending interoperability features with a delegated consensus model.
The protocol directly addresses the fragmentation that isolates disparate blockchains from one another. ARK’s signature utility, the SmartBridge, allows validated bridged chains to communicate, exchange data, and trigger cross-chain events. This creates a unified medium where Bitcoin, Ethereum, Lisk, and other ecosystems can interact without relying on centralized intermediaries, reducing the friction of siloed ledger environments.
ARK operates on its own blockchain using delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS). Unlike proof-of-work miners, the network relies on a dynamic set of elected delegates to validate transactions and forge new blocks, shifting security responsibilities to a continuously audited group selected by token-weighted community voting.
The DPoS architecture caps active forging delegates at 51. Token holders lock in votes for one delegate at a time, with a flat 1 ARK fee applied to vote or unvote. The ARK Desktop Wallet connects directly to fully synchronized network peers, eliminating any requirement to download the entire blockchain. This lightweight client design, paired with the SmartBridge messaging layer, enables third-party blockchains to be integrated for specialized tasks—gaming economies, privacy-oriented integrations, and payment channels.
The project genesis traces to February 2017, when a globally distributed collective of 27 contributors launched the network. That initial team later consolidated into 15 core developers, with members operating from California to Bulgaria. The technical lineage borrows heavily from Bitshares, Crypti, and Lisk; Francois-Xavier Thoorens, ARK’s CTO, previously served as a core developer at Lisk in 2016, bringing direct experience with DPoS consensus engineering and sidechain tooling.
The overarching mission pushes blockchain utility into environments where end-users remain oblivious to the underlying technology. By constructing a spiderweb of linked chains and complementary services—including optional anonymous transaction pathways via third-party integration—the system aspires to deliver consumer-grade applications that mask cryptographic complexity while preserving a decentralized settlement layer.
The ARK token governs delegate selection and fuels network interactions. Every unit of ARK translates into proportional voting weight, allowing holders to continuously steer which 51 nodes secure the network. A single vote costs 1 ARK, creating a recurring economic drain that discourages apathy and rewards active participation in consensus curation.
Token holders elect forging delegates who then produce blocks and secure transaction finality. Larger ARK balances amplify voting influence, aligning economic incentives with the ongoing stability of the network. Projects that deploy their own bridged chains within the ecosystem further tether demand to the token, as cross-chain SmartBridge calls frequently require ARK-based settlement.
ARK has a total supply of 196,086,604 tokens. Currently, 196,086,604 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $33,779,972, ARK ranks #618 among all cryptocurrencies.
