Ampleforth Governance Token (FORTH) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2021. It functions as the official governance token of the Ampleforth protocol, a system that algorithmically adjusts the supply of its native unit, AMPL, in response to market demand.
The Ampleforth protocol solves a specific monetary friction: how to maintain a unit of account that stays indifferent to demand-side pressures. By continuously expanding and contracting the supply of AMPL across all user wallets, it creates a price-elastic asset that does not rely on collateralization in the traditional sense. FORTH exists solely to push the boundaries of that system’s decision-making toward full decentralization, giving its community a direct lever over the protocol’s evolutionary path.
FORTH operates on the Ethereum network. As a token, it inherits the security guarantees of Ethereum’s existing validator set without needing to bootstrap its own consensus mechanism. The asset’s existence is tethered to the base-layer neutrality of Ethereum, a neutrality that amplifies the credibility of its governance processes rather than depending on a separate chain.
The token is an ERC-20 standard asset, which means it integrates with virtually any Ethereum wallet, decentralized exchange, or custody infrastructure. That standard is minimal and auditable. No exotic cryptographic assumptions or custom execution environments are layered on top—just a straightforward compliance with the most widely adopted token interface in the industry, mirrored by a verified contract on Etherscan.
The FORTH token emerged from the Ampleforth ecosystem in April 2021. While the core Ampleforth protocol had been operational for several years prior, the launch of a standalone governance token marked a deliberate transition of protocol control away from the founding team. The distribution was structured to place voting power directly in the hands of early users, liquidity providers, and the broader community, rather than concentrating it in a foundation or insiders.
The overarching mission is to build a governance layer that can steward a fully autonomous, supply-elastic monetary instrument. Unlike pegged stablecoins that rely on reserve assets, Ampleforth’s AMPL adjusts quantity to target a price range. FORTH gives the collective a mechanism to refine that targeting logic, amend execution parameters, and ensure the protocol remains resilient and resistant to capture. It is not a passive franchise; it is a continuous responsibility for a live economic system.
Mechanically, FORTH has one clean-cut role: it is a voting token. Holders do not stake it for yield, burn it for gas, or lock it for credit. Its entire utility is confined to ratifying or rejecting proposals that alter the Ampleforth protocol. The token’s on-chain weight determines the scope of a user’s influence, and delegation is built into the framework so that inactive holders can assign their voting power to active representatives.
A FORTH holder might cast a direct vote on adjusting the AMPL rebase algorithm’s sensitivity, changing oracle data sources, or allocating community treasury funds. Delegation allows a skilled analyst or a recognized delegate to vote on another’s behalf without the original holder losing custody. Validators and users alike rely on this mechanism to ensure the protocol evolves without central points of failure.
Ampleforth Governance Token has a total supply of 15,297,897 tokens. Currently, 10,703,546 tokens are in circulation. The remaining supply is held in protocol reserves and other long-term distribution contracts, though the token does not follow a defined emission schedule or halving cycle. With a market capitalization of $3,500,003, Ampleforth Governance Token ranks #1,887 among all cryptocurrencies.
