Xahau (XAH) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2023. The asset operates as the native token of a Layer 1 sidechain engineered to graft programmable logic directly onto the XRP Ledger ecosystem through a novel scripting primitive called Hooks.
The protocol addresses the XRPL’s historic absence of native smart contracts without bolting on a separate virtual machine. Hooks are lightweight, event-driven code snippets that lodge inside individual accounts and enforce conditional rules on every transaction those accounts touch. A payment can be gated on multi-sig thresholds, time locks, or balance triggers, all executing atomically with the ledger state. This design sidesteps the overhead of full-featured smart contract platforms while unlocking automated escrows, recurring payments, and intricate decentralized exchange strategies natively.
Xahau operates on its own blockchain as a federated sidechain running parallel to the XRP Ledger mainnet. Block production and finality occur independently, insulating Hook execution from the main chain’s consensus. The separation ensures that spikes in computational demand from complex scripts never impair the XRPL’s core payment settlement throughput.
Hooks compile to compact bytecode and sit inert inside accounts until a candidate transaction triggers their logic. Execution fees scale dynamically with the computational depth of the Hook, a metering mechanism that throttles resource abuse and keeps state bloat economically irrational. A Genesis Hook Governance Game, baked into the launch protocol, dictates the algorithmic emission of XAH and rebalances incentives. Validators and governance participants influence emission curves without hard forks, a process encoded entirely in the same Hook layer that governs the chain.
The network emerged on October 31, 2023, with no single founding entity publicly claiming authorship. Builders from the broader XRPL community orchestrated the launch, drawing on existing ledger tooling to bootstrap the sidechain. The codebase exists as a set of open repositories under the Xahau GitHub organization, and initial liquidity seeded across three trading pairs on a sparse cluster of exchanges. No venture capital round preceded the genesis block.
Xahau’s design ethos centers on permissionless financial scripting that preserves the XRPL’s defining traits: rapid finality, near-zero base fees, and a battle-tested consensus model. Rather than importing an Ethereum-compatible runtime, it equips the account itself with programmable conditional checks, enabling multi-step settlement flows that execute without custodial intermediaries or wrapped asset bridges.
XAH serves as the network gas commodity, consumed by every Hook invocation and standard payment. Accounts that host Hooks must lock a static reserve in XAH, a sunk cost that deters frivolous script deployment, while the caller incurs a variable fee proportionate to the instruction count and memory footprint of the triggered logic. Token holdings also gate participation in the Genesis Hook Governance Game, where votes on emission parameters are weighted by committed stakes.
A validator operator stocks XAH collateral to anchor the security model and harvest a share of block rewards routed through the governance game. Developers burn XAH to deploy scripts, and application users spend it as gas whenever a Hook evaluates their transaction. An escrow service might consume a negligible fraction of a token, whereas a cross-account revenue distribution Hook with dozens of conditional branches burns noticeably more, directly coupling consumption to the complexity of on-chain automation.
Xahau (XAH) has a maximum supply of 100,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 0 are in circulation. Emission unfolds under the programmatic control of the Genesis Hook Governance Game, which releases rewards to active participants without a fixed halving schedule. With a market capitalization of $0, Xahau ranks #4,780 among all cryptocurrencies.
