USD Coin (USDC) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2024. It operates as a fully reserved U.S. dollar stablecoin, a digital cash equivalent engineered to maintain a 1:1 peg through segregated fiat backing and systematic redemption mechanisms.
The asset resolves a chronic friction in crypto markets—the latency and expense of bridging bank dollars with on-chain liquidity. Trading desks, automated market makers, and DeFi protocols embed USDC as a constant-value quote currency, using it to denominate pairs, collateralize margin, and settle cross-border transfers without touching traditional rails. Dollar exposure becomes a bearer instrument that circulates 24/7 on public ledgers.
USDC operates on the Ethereum network. Issuance radiates outward to Sui, XRP Ledger, Stellar, Hedera, and dozens of L2 rollups, all anchored by a shared fiat reserve. Each chain-level deployment adapts the host’s native token standard while a centralized mint-and-burn bridge logic enforces a consolidated global supply.
On Ethereum, the contract adheres to the ERC-20 standard with six-decimal precision and publicly verifiable authorization functions. Reserve attestations link the outstanding token supply to audited fiat balances held at U.S. financial institutions. The open-source codebase, hosted at centrehq, has accumulated 739 GitHub stars and governs an upgradeable proxy that coordinates supply reconciliation across bridges.
Circle, in collaboration with the Centre consortium, launched USDC in 2024 as a compliance-forward response to unregulated offshore stablecoins. The design prioritizes regulatory conformity under frameworks such as MiCA, a posture underscored by a dedicated MiCA whitepaper and multi-jurisdictional licensing. The consortium’s source repository encodes the burn-and-issue primitives that keep supply synchronized across Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, NEAR, and every integrated execution environment.
The project’s ambition reaches beyond simple dollar tracking. By making value as routable as an email message, it seeks to dismantle artificial economic borders. Fungible dollar tokens on a permissionless infrastructure theoretically grant any internet-connected participant the ability to hold and move dollar-denominated assets independent of legacy banking hours or correspondent networks.
Each circulating token maps to an equivalent dollar held in segregated accounts with regulated custodians. Authorized integrators initiate minting by wiring fiat to Circle, which then broadcasts the corresponding tokens onto the designated chain. Redemption burns the tokens and releases the underlying dollars. This mint-to-burn cycle mechanically enforces the 1:1 peg outside of extreme market dislocation.
Liquidity providers deposit USDC into concentrated liquidity pools to earn swap fees. Lending protocols accept it as collateral for borrowing volatile assets like ETH or SOL. Exchanges maintain deep USDC order books as a neutral bridge currency, settling crypto-to-crypto trades instantly without reintroducing fiat settlement risk. Corporate treasuries and payment processors route disbursements through USDC for near-instant, low-cost settlement across time zones.
USDC has a total supply of 77,742,302,916.55 tokens. Currently, 77,740,671,407.71 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $77,723,370,117, USD Coin ranks #6 among all cryptocurrencies.
