The Graph (GRT) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2018. It operates as a decentralized indexing protocol designed to organize and query blockchain data through a global, serverless API.
The protocol addresses a fundamental friction in Web3 infrastructure: the tedious, resource-intensive process of building custom indexing pipelines. By standardizing data retrieval via GraphQL, The Graph enables developers to construct decentralized applications that run entirely on public, trustless infrastructure without managing centralized servers. This indexing backbone underpins DeFi dashboards, NFT marketplaces, and increasingly, autonomous AI agents that require real-time on-chain data.
The Graph operates on the Ethereum network. Its token, GRT, conforms to the ERC-20 standard, while the protocol’s coordination network spans a multi-chain landscape of indexers, curators, and delegators. This architecture abstracts away the complexities of raw blockchain state, delivering a unified query layer across EVM and non-EVM ecosystems alike.
The protocol’s core developer interface, Subgraphs, allows teams to define, deploy, and query custom data models without provisioning dedicated middleware. Supplementing this, Substreams deliver high-throughput, compositional data pipelines that stream real-time updates from high-speed networks like Solana and Sonic. A new Token API beta eliminates indexing altogether for standard token metadata, while the GRC-20 knowledge graph standard introduces structured, interoperable data organization across decentralized applications.
Founded by Yaniv Tal, Brandon Ramirez, and Jannis Pohlmann, the project debuted in 2018 with a sharp focus on Ethereum indexing. Over subsequent years, integration expanded to Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, and a slate of other chains. The Sunrise Upgrade Program, unfurled in 2024, marked the full transition from a hosted service to a permissionless, staking-based decentralized network, cinching years of progressive decentralization.
The Graph’s overarching remit is to serve as the composable, decentralized query engine for the open internet, dismantling reliance on single-point data silos. Its infrastructure targets a future where data-driven AI agents and verifiable compute workflows operate across chains without proprietary backend lock-in. By codifying a universal standard for on-chain data access, the protocol consciously positions itself as foundational fabric for a trust-minimized digital economy.
Within this system, GRT is not a passive asset; it is the work-horse that coordinates economic security. Indexers stake GRT to run infrastructure and earn query fees, while delegators allocate tokens to underwriters in exchange for a revenue split. Curators signal GRT toward subgraphs, creating a discovery market that prioritizes accurate, well-maintained data sources. Consumers, including automated agents, spend GRT to retrieve the indexed information required for their operations.
An indexer pledges a substantial GRT bond to establish trust and secure the right to serve queries. Delegators contribute GRT to reliable indexing pools, receiving a proportional share of the generated income without operating hardware. Curators analyze the ecosystem, bonding GRT to valuable data sets early, hoping to capture a fraction of future query volume as those subgraphs gain traction.
The Graph has a maximum supply of 10,800,262,823.32 tokens. Currently, 10,799,438,664.94 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $265,303,397, The Graph ranks #154 among all cryptocurrencies.
