Tellor (TRB) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2019. The asset powers a decentralized oracle protocol designed to bridge off-chain data to Ethereum smart contracts.
Ethereum smart contracts operate in isolated execution environments, restricting native access to external information. Tellor addresses this friction by enabling any entity to request a specific off-chain data point—a price pair like ETH/USD, for instance—and incentivizing a network of miners to deliver that data into a permissionless on-chain repository. This repository then becomes accessible to all smart contracts, functioning as a canonical source of high-value data points for decentralized applications.
The protocol operates on the Ethereum network. A set of staked miners compete to source and submit data values to the main Tellor smart contract, which collates these inputs into an auditable time series for each requested data series. Every new value appended updates a permanent record that any smart contract can reference trustlessly.
TRB functions as an ERC-20 token, and the protocol has extended its reach across multiple Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible chains, including Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Gnosis Chain. The core contract creates a timestamped sequence of values, secured by the economic incentives of miners who must stake TRB to participate in data provision. A user initiating a data query pays in the native token, originally called Tributes, triggering the competitive validation process.
Tellor originated in 2019, with its mainnet contract deployed in August of that year. The project did not emerge from a single prominent founder narrative but instead grew from an open-source community focused on solving oracle reliability challenges in DeFi. Early adoption soon integrated Tellor data feeds into lending protocols and derivative platforms spanning the Ethereum ecosystem, propelling its multichain expansion.
The long-term objective is to establish a censorship-resistant, decentralized data standard for smart contracts, ensuring that high-value information such as asset prices cannot be manipulated or gatekept by any single entity. By aligning incentives through staking and token rewards, Tellor seeks to foster a trustless data layer that underpins the next wave of financial primitives without reliance on centralized intermediaries.
Within the protocol, the TRB token serves as the economic fuel for data requests. A user pays TRB to submit a query for an off-chain data series, directly incentivizing miners to fetch and report the correct value. Miners, in turn, must stake TRB as collateral that is slashed if they submit inaccurate data, a mechanism that enforces honest participation and data integrity.
Data consumers spend TRB to request specific feed updates, directly compensating miners for their work. Miners who hold and stake TRB can participate in data reporting and earn both the direct tips from data requesters and protocol-issued block rewards. Third-party developers and protocols that need reliable oracle data continuously purchase TRB to initiate queries, creating systematic demand for the token.
Tellor has a total supply of 2,850,542 tokens. Currently, 2,778,547 are in circulation. New TRB enters circulation as block rewards for miners who successfully submit data values. With a market capitalization of $50,477,750, Tellor ranks #471 among all cryptocurrencies.
