Secret (SCRT) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2020. The asset anchors the Secret Network—a layer-1 blockchain engineered explicitly for computational privacy, not just anonymous transfers.
Developers deploy “secret contracts” that ingest encrypted inputs and process data inside shielded execution environments. This architecture finally addresses a chronic friction in public ledgers: the exposure of sensitive financial or personal data to every network observer. Conventional smart contracts on transparent chains render confidential deal flow, identity credentials, and proprietary machine learning models impossible. The network’s privacy-preserving capabilities unlock DeFi primitives, sealed-bid auctions, and private access control that were previously unviable.
Secret operates on its own blockchain. A globally distributed set of nodes, called secret nodes, performs generalizable computations over ciphertext, never peeking at the raw data. The network advances beyond transactional anonymity, delivering programmable confidentiality that envelops the entire state of a smart contract.
Secret contracts run inside a secure enclave where code, state, and input remain encrypted, making the data invisible even to the node operators executing the work. Interoperability flows through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, tethering Secret to the wider Cosmos archipelago and enabling cross-chain private transfers. The chain’s infrastructure suits a lineup of verticals—confidential DeFi, private NFT metadata, decentralized identity, and access-restricted DAO voting.
The Secret Network materialized from a consortium that included Enigma, the Secret Foundation, Secretnodes.org, and Chain of Secrets, going live with mainnet in February 2020. No singular figurehead dominates the narrative; instead, a distributed cohort of research and development groups shaped the protocol’s genesis. Post-launch, an expanding set of independent teams has hardened the codebase and grown the application layer.
The long-term objective is to rewire how blockchains handle sensitive information, transforming networks from open panopticons into permissioned data spaces where disclosure is programmable. Its vision touches clinical trial data, off-chain IoT telemetry, and any scenario in which verifiable computation must coexist with strict data confidentiality. In a sector where radical transparency often tramples user protection, Secret injects a cryptographic bulwark against involuntary information leakage.
SCRT is the native gas and staking token that fuels the network’s privacy engine. Every secret contract execution consumes SCRT in fees, compensating node operators for the intensive cryptographic overhead. Beyond fee settlement, the token underwrites proof-of-stake security: validators bond SCRT to propose blocks, and delegators stake to earn a portion of protocol emissions and fee proceeds.
Validators lock SCRT to secure the network and receive emission rewards, effectively underwriting the data confidentiality that makes private computation possible. Developers spend SCRT to deploy and invoke secret contracts, paying the premium for shielded execution paths that opaque chains cannot replicate. Stakers who run or delegate to secret nodes continually earn transaction fees and block rewards, aligning their economic incentive with the network’s privacy guarantees.
Secret has a total supply of 353,448,810.91 SCRT tokens. Currently, 338,390,259.98 SCRT are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $37,119,728.00, Secret ranks #576 among all cryptocurrencies.
