Railgun (RAIL) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2021 that operates on the Ethereum platform. It functions as the native utility token of a privacy-preserving smart contract system that secures decentralized exchange trading and lending through zero-knowledge cryptography.
The protocol delivers zk-SNARK privacy to any transaction or smart contract interaction directly on Ethereum, without introducing bridges, layer-2 networks, or off-chain dependencies. Users build private token balances and trade, send, or interact with DeFi applications from those shielded positions, never forced to withdraw to a transparent surface. This architecture counteracts the default transparency of public ledgers that exposes trading strategy, position size, and counterparty identity to front-runners and surveillance.
RAILGUN operates as a smart contract suite deployed on the Ethereum network, with functioning instances also on BSC, Polygon, and Arbitrum. By remaining fully on-chain, the system refuses the security trade-offs that typically accompany sidechain or cross-chain privacy solutions, executing all logic within the execution environment of the host chain.
The technical core inserts a zk-SNARK shielding layer into standard EVM transactions, anonymizing any ERC-20 transfer, contract call, or DEX interaction. The RAIL token itself conforms to the ERC-20 standard. No separate consensus engine governs the privacy module; it inherits the base layer’s settlement guarantees while generating zero-knowledge proofs that undergo on-chain verification, ensuring computational correctness without leaking the underlying data.
Originating in the United Kingdom, the RAILGUN protocol launched on Ethereum in July 2021. Privacy-conscious DeFi actors seeking front-running protection and discreet trading strategies drove early adoption. Multi-chain expansion advanced through community governance votes that steered deployments to EVM-compatible ecosystems, mirroring the organic fragmentation of on-chain liquidity.
The protocol’s ambition is to embed transactional privacy as a native composable layer, restoring confidentiality without fragmenting the composability that underpins modern DeFi. It treats private execution not as an opaque walled garden but as a programmable resource, enabling lending markets, automated market makers, and aggregators to interact with shielded balances without forced disclosure.
RAIL functions as a utility and governance token. Staking RAIL unlocks a proportional share of a treasury reward stream, while simultaneously conferring voting power over protocol upgrades, fee parameters, treasury allocations, and new chain deployments. The economic weight of a stake directly governs administrative control, aligning long-term treasury health with governance participation.
A MEV-vulnerable trader stakes RAIL to capture protocol fee distributions and votes to whitelist a new shielded pool on Arbitrum. A liquidity provider shields a large position, executes swaps privately, and avoids sandwich attacks that would otherwise extract value from transparent mempools. Stakers secure the privacy set by locking capital and exercising governance oversight, substituting validator participation with economic commitment to the system’s credibility.
Railgun has a maximum supply of 100,000,000 tokens. Currently, 57,500,000 RAIL are in circulation. The token operates as an ERC-20 asset on Ethereum, with live deployments also on BSC, Polygon, and Arbitrum. With a market capitalization of $87,773,992.00, Railgun ranks #314 among all cryptocurrencies.
