Ondo Finance (ONDO) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2021. The project anchors a DeFi ecosystem explicitly designed to bridge decentralized credit markets with tokenized real-world securities.
The protocol’s primary utility revolves around Flux Finance, a lending market that for the first time accepts tokenized securities as collateral. By encoding institutional-grade assets like U.S. Treasuries onto a blockchain, Ondo Finance dismantles the longstanding friction of exclusive access. Borrowers can pledge these on-chain representations while lenders earn yield derived from off-chain, regulated instruments. This mechanism directly imports conventional financial products into a permissionless environment without relying on fragile synthetic proxies.
Ondo Finance operates on the Ethereum network.
The protocol leverages Ethereum’s smart contract infrastructure, issuing ONDO as an ERC-20 token that underpins governance operations and the Flux Finance credit facility. Token holders interact with audited on-chain contracts that collateralize real-world assets, blending the settlement finality of Ethereum with the legal enforceability of traditional securities. No bespoke sidechain or layer-2 abstraction mediates these transactions; the logic executes natively within Ethereum’s virtual machine, secured by the network’s decentralized validator set.
The ONDO token first appeared in 2021, ahead of the formal incorporation of the Ondo Foundation the following year. The Foundation itself is a Cayman Islands nonprofit company without beneficial owners—an independently governed entity that assisted in launching the Ondo DAO. That DAO subsequently deployed Flux Finance, the inaugural lending protocol engineered to accept tokenized securities as collateral. Early adoption concentrated among institutions seeking on-chain liquidity against their off-chain portfolios.
The project’s core objective is to strip away the structural barriers that quarantine institutional-grade financial products from a broader user base. Tokenizing real-world assets and embedding them directly into decentralized lending rails creates a conduit where high-quality yield-bearing instruments become globally accessible. This architecture refuses to settle for replicating existing DeFi primitives, aiming instead to fuse regulated credit markets with the transparency and programmability of open-source finance.
ONDO functions as the governance token of the Ondo DAO, granting holders the capacity to vote on protocol parameters for Flux Finance and the DAO’s broader strategic direction. Token-weighted ballot power determines critical decisions such as collateral asset whitelisting, interest rate curves, liquidation ratios, and treasury allocations. The token does not service gas fees or function as a medium of exchange within the lending protocol; its role is strictly administrative, steering the protocol’s evolutionary path via on-chain proposals.
Holders of ONDO actively participate in DAO governance, voting on proposals that dictate Flux Finance’s collateral types, risk thresholds, and fee structures. Accumulating and strategically delegating tokens permits influence over the protocol’s operational framework without centralized intermediaries. Participation aligns incentives between long-term users and the platform’s sustainability, as governance outcomes directly affect lending rates and asset eligibility.
Ondo Finance has a maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 4,869,330,647 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $1,259,234,603, Ondo Finance ranks #62 among all cryptocurrencies.
