Loopring (LRC) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2017. The asset underpins a decentralized exchange and payment protocol that operates as a Layer-2 scaling solution on Ethereum.
The protocol fuses an orderbook-based exchange with automated market maker pools, settling transactions off-chain through zero-knowledge proofs. This architecture dismantles the prohibitive cost and latency barriers that historically crippled on-chain decentralized trading. Professional market makers and algorithmic traders finally gain infrastructure capable of executing strategies that were previously exclusive to centralized venues.
Loopring operates on the Ethereum network, using the base chain exclusively as a data availability and cryptographic verification layer. Computation and trade execution migrate entirely to the off-chain zkRollup environment. This design inherits Ethereum’s security guarantees while circumventing its congestion.
Trade throughput peaks at 2,025 transactions per second, with individual settlement costs compressed to $0.00015. Such metrics stem from a zero-knowledge proof circuit that aggregates thousands of trades into a single succinct proof. The native LRC token conforms to the ERC-20 standard and exists across Ethereum and sidechain deployments like Arbitrum.
The protocol’s genesis took root in China during August 2017. Early iterations evolved through multiple design revisions, culminating in Loopring 3.0—the first version to demonstrate commercially viable orderbook-based DEX operation on an L2 rollup. The shift to zkRollup architecture marked a decisive departure from earlier hybrid designs.
The project’s long-term thesis hinges on a conviction that non-custodial exchanges can structurally outperform and displace centralized counterparts. By delivering institutional-grade throughput without sacrificing self-custody, Loopring aims to render custodial risk obsolete. Its architecture is purpose-built to enable trust-minimized financial infrastructure at scale.
LRC functions as a governance token, entitling holders to vote on protocol parameters, fee switches, and treasury allocations. The token also facilitates participation in the ecosystem’s incentive structure, though the core exchange protocol does not mandate its use for trade settlement. Governance mechanisms are executed on-chain, binding parameter changes directly to holder decisions.
Token holders cast votes on proposals that adjust protocol fee structures, listed token pairs, and treasury distributions. Each vote binds on-chain, enforcing changes without reliance on any centralized operator. This governance model distributes administrative control among LRC stakeholders.
Loopring has a maximum supply of 1,374,513,896 tokens. Currently, 1,245,991,469 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $21,412,848, Loopring ranks #833 among all cryptocurrencies.
