Litecoin (LTC) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2011. It operates as a decentralized peer-to-peer digital currency and a Layer 1 proof-of-work blockchain.
The protocol delivers near-instant, low-cost value transfer for individuals and merchants, sidestepping intermediaries and central bank dependencies. A targeted block time of 2.5 minutes produces transaction confirmations roughly four times faster than Bitcoin’s cadence, directly addressing settlement lag in digital payments. Scrypt-based proof-of-work underpins this throughput, making the network a pragmatic alternative for everyday commercial activity.
Litecoin operates on its own blockchain using proof-of-work. Miners solve computational puzzles with the Scrypt algorithm to finalize blocks every 2.5 minutes, reinforcing network immutability. A hard-capped supply of 84 million tokens governs its monetary policy.
The network implements the Scrypt hashing function, chosen to broaden mining participation beyond ASIC-dominated ecosystems. In May 2022, the MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) soft fork introduced optional confidential transactions, obscuring amounts between sender and receiver. Litecoin also supports merge-mining with Dogecoin, a mechanism that allows auxiliary proof-of-work without fragmenting hashpower.
Former Google engineer Charlie Lee created Litecoin by forking the Bitcoin Core client, releasing the code on October 7, 2011, and bringing the network live on October 13. It became the earliest meaningful altcoin, tracing its lineage through Fairbrix and Tenebrix—experiments that pioneered Scrypt but suffered from flawed tokenomics. Lee reinstated a hard supply cap of 84 million coins. A non-profit Litecoin Foundation now coordinates ecosystem growth, maintaining a developer community without venture capital backing.
The project’s enduring aim is to function as a globally accessible, censorship-resistant payment rail—digital silver complementing Bitcoin’s gold. It prioritizes speed and low cost to facilitate everyday transactions across borders without reliance on centralized clearinghouses.
Within the protocol, LTC settles all transactions: fees accrue in litoshis, the 0.00000001 subdivision, and block rewards flow solely to miners. A programmed halving cycle, triggered every 840,000 blocks, systematically reduces the subsidy; the next cut drops the reward to 6.25 LTC. The coin carries no voting rights or staking yield—its utility is confined to value transfer and miner incentivization.
Miners accumulate LTC to cover electricity and hardware costs, liquidating a portion to sustain operations. Merchants integrate LTC via point-of-sale tools like BitPay, accepting it for goods and services with lower fees than card networks. Institutional treasuries, such as those built by Lite Strategy and Luxxfolio Holdings, allocate balance sheet reserves to LTC for its 84-million supply cap and high liquidity.
Litecoin has a maximum supply of 84,000,000 tokens. Currently, 77,090,683.23 are in circulation. Block rewards halve roughly every four years, with the next reduction expected to bring the subsidy to 6.25 LTC per block. With a market capitalization of $4,339,437,063, Litecoin ranks #25 among all cryptocurrencies.
