About Internet Computer

Internet Computer (ICP) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2021. The protocol operates as a decentralized cloud blockchain, engineered to host applications, websites, and backend systems entirely on-chain.

The network directly attacks the centralization of conventional cloud services by offering a serverless environment where code executes across a global array of independent data centers. No single corporate entity controls the infrastructure. Developers sidestep the lock-in risks and single points of failure inherent in Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud while deploying smart contracts without managing dedicated servers.

Internet Computer operates on its own blockchain. Its design integrates high cryptographic resilience for tamper-proof execution and native multi-chain connectivity. Node machines, running in disparate data centers worldwide, synchronize into subnets that collectively form the compute fabric—no external base layer mediates this trust.

Developers interact with the execution layer by writing serverless code through browser-based IDEs like icp.ninja, which compiles directly to the chain’s virtual environment. ICP also lives as wrapped ERC-20 token contracts on Ethereum and Base, bridging liquidity into those DeFi ecosystems. The protocol’s state is partitioned across subnets, each tasked with processing a subset of canisters, enabling high throughput.

The Dfinity Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit, brought Internet Computer to market on May 10, 2021. The launch followed a widely noted capital formation with investments from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Polychain Capital. Early adoption centered on building out social media platforms, enterprise tools, and simple dapps directly on the chain, underscoring a push to shift beyond speculative token use.

The project’s long-term aim is a fully autonomous web where every service—from frontend interfaces to databases—runs on a single, trustless substrate. A so-called “self-writing cloud” forms the core of this vision: AI tools interpret natural-language instructions to automatically generate deployable software, collapsing the gap between idea and running code. If realized, such a leap would collapse the gap between conception and live application deployment.

ICP functions as a twin-utility token. To fuel computation, developers convert ICP into “cycles,” a stable internal accounting unit that burns upon consumption—every data read, write, or compute step eats into this finite pool. Separate from this resource burn, token holders lock ICP in governance staking positions, where they vote on protocol upgrades and treasury decisions, earning emissions as compensation for their participation.

A validator or token holder staking ICP secures the chain and receives newly minted governance rewards in return; the process also shapes the network’s evolutionary trajectory by weighting voting power. Developers systematically acquire ICP to mint cycles, using them to pay for hosting their dapps, websites, or enterprise backends. In some applications, users indirectly trigger cycle consumption, though the experience abstracts the underlying token mechanics.

Internet Computer has a total supply of 551,928,018.17 ICP tokens. Currently, all 551,928,018.17 tokens are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $1,357,915,346, Internet Computer ranks #58 among all cryptocurrencies.
