About Gearbox

Gearbox Protocol (GEAR) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2021. It functions as a generalized leverage protocol in decentralized finance, consolidating borrowed capital into a single composable layer that users can deploy across multiple integrated yield farms and trading venues.

The protocol reconciles two distinct market participants: passive liquidity providers seeking enhanced yields and active traders or leveraged farmers who require borrowed capital to amplify positions. By pooling credit, Gearbox eliminates the fragmentation that forces users to manage separate borrowing positions for each DeFi interaction. A depositor supplies assets to earn dynamic APY, while a borrower can deploy up to 4x leverage inside a unified credit account without exiting to other interfaces.

Gearbox Protocol operates on the Ethereum network. The protocol’s smart contracts enforce permissionless credit accounts, isolating risk per position to prevent cross-contamination. It inherits Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus, relying on the base layer for finality and security.

The native GEAR token exists as an ERC-20 asset, with its core contract anchored on Ethereum. The protocol’s defining technical abstraction is the Credit Account: an isolated smart contract that holds both collateral and borrowed funds, acting as a programmable basket for leveraged strategies. Because each account enforces its own collateralization ratio, the system prevents cross-position contagion without demanding overcollateralization from the broader pool.

Gearbox Protocol’s origins trace to late 2021, when its mainnet contracts were deployed. While the founding team remains pseudonymous, the project quickly drew backing from crypto-native venture portfolios, notably eGirl Capital and Galaxy Digital. A Binance Alpha spotlight further amplified its reach within lending and leverage circles.

Gearbox’s long-term ambition is to function as invisible infrastructure—a backend credit layer that applications integrate without their end users ever directly touching the protocol. By abstracting leverage into a callable function, any DeFi app could embed borrowing capabilities natively, turning margin trading and leveraged farming into default features rather than standalone products. This vision reframes Gearbox not as a user-facing dApp but as a middleware solution for capital efficiency.

The GEAR token functions as the primary coordination and incentive layer within the ecosystem. Staking the token allows holders to capture a share of protocol fees generated from leverage usage and to direct future development decisions. This mechanism ensures that individuals most exposed to the protocol’s economic performance retain control over its risk frameworks and treasury.

Holding GEAR enables participation in the protocol’s on-chain governance, where voters determine collateral types, approved integrations, and fee models. Token stakers receive a portion of the revenues generated from borrowing fees, creating a direct economic link between protocol usage and holder returns. The token does not confer rights to the underlying liquidity pools; rather, it functions as the administrative key for the credit layer’s operational parameters.

Gearbox Protocol has a maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens. Currently, 10,000,000,000 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $2,228,358, Gearbox Protocol ranks #2,241 among all cryptocurrencies.
