Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (BSV) is a cryptocurrency launched in 2018. It emerged from a contentious hard fork of Bitcoin Cash, itself a 2017 offshoot from the original Bitcoin chain.
The network positions itself as a restoration of Satoshi Nakamoto’s original protocol—a peer-to-peer electronic cash system with no artificial constraints. BSV strips away block size caps and re-activates long-disabled Script opcodes, allowing the blockchain to function as a global data ledger capable of tens of thousands of transactions per second. Transaction fees remain structurally near-zero, enabling high-volume micropayments and enterprise-grade applications like tokenization, smart contracts, and arbitrary data storage.
Bitcoin SV operates on its own blockchain using proof-of-work. Miners validate transactions and compete to append new blocks via SHA-256 hashing, exactly mirroring the Nakamoto consensus mechanism. The chain diverged from Bitcoin Cash at block height 556766 by raising the block size limit to 128 megabytes, but subsequent protocol upgrades eliminated the limit entirely to pursue unbounded on-chain scaling.
The technical stack retains the SHA-256 hashing algorithm and leverages an unaltered Bitcoin scripting language that was largely locked down in earlier Bitcoin forks. BSV’s restoration of the full original opcode set makes it natively Turing complete without the abstraction of a separate virtual machine, directly supporting compute operations on the ledger. The network processes tens of thousands of transactions per second, with block sizes routinely exceeding multiple gigabytes.
The protocol was advanced by a group fronted by Craig Steven Wright—who since 2015 has claimed the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto—and backed by entrepreneur Calvin Ayre. Wright’s controversial persona intensified after the fork, culminating in Binance’s 2019 delisting of BSV, citing unethical conduct. The network then suffered repeated 51% attacks in mid-2021, during which hostile miners gained majority hash power to reorganize the chain. In March 2024, a UK High Court judge ruled conclusively that Wright is not Nakamoto.
The project’s long-term objective extends beyond payments: BSV aims to serve as the foundational data layer for a new internet architecture, where immutable on-chain storage replaces siloed databases. Proponents envision a single global chain that absorbs all economic and informational activity, from supply chain logging to social media posts, without intermediaries.
Within the protocol, BSV tokens function as the sole unit of account for transaction fees, computable contracts, and data write operations. Every smart contract execution, token issuance, and file upload consumes a fee denominated in satoshis, which miners collect alongside the block subsidy. The token has no staking, governance, or delegation mechanisms; its utility is exclusively bound to paying for on-chain actions.
Miners lock up capital in hardware and electricity to secure the network, receiving newly created BSV and accumulated transaction fees as compensation. Merchants and platforms hold BSV to settle instant micropayments without intermediary clearing. Developers deploying tokenization schemes, NFT protocols, or identity systems must acquire and spend the coin to anchor state changes onto the immutable ledger.
Bitcoin Satoshi Vision has a maximum supply of 21,000,000 tokens. Currently, 20,019,534.38 are in circulation. With a market capitalization of $321,942,503, Bitcoin Satoshi Vision ranks #135 among all cryptocurrencies.
